Portuguese coach takes helm at Moroccan powerhouse AS FAR
Alexandre Santos has been appointed as the new head coach of AS FAR, the Rabat-based football club announced on Sunday. Santos succeeds Frenchman Hubert Velud, who departed from his position on February 5.
The Portuguese tactician brings extensive experience from his work across European, African, and Middle Eastern leagues. His most recent role was with CS Sfaxien, which concluded in December 2024. Santos' managerial portfolio includes stints at Petro Luanda in Angola, as well as Alverca and Real SC in Portugal.
His career also features notable assistant coaching positions with prominent clubs, including FC Porto, SC Braga, Sharjah FC in the UAE, and SM Caen in France's Ligue 1.
Santos joins AS FAR at a crucial juncture, with the club pursuing success on multiple fronts. The team currently holds second place in the Botola standings, accumulating 37 points from 20 matches. Additionally, AS FAR has secured a spot in the CAF Champions League quarter-finals, with the draw scheduled for February 20 in Doha.
The new appointment carries significant responsibility as Santos is tasked with maintaining the club's momentum while pursuing silverware in both domestic and continental competitions. The outcome of the upcoming Champions League draw will determine the team's path forward in their continental campaign.
