Pakistan calls for dialogue amid rising tensions with India
Pakistan's Ambassador to Morocco, Syed Adil Gilani, has articulated his country's stance on the escalating tensions with India, emphasizing the urgent need for diplomatic dialogue and international intervention. Speaking to Morocco World News, the ambassador described the current crisis as "unfortunate," highlighting the perilous implications of potential conflict between two nuclear powers.
Gilani underscored that while Kashmir remains a historical point of contention, the present tensions arise from different circumstances, rather than solely from territorial disputes. He characterized the situation as an "election gimmick" by India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi, suggesting that the political motivations behind the escalation warrant a focus on dialogue rather than confrontation.
"The current situation can be diffused and resolved by bilateral dialogues," Gilani stated, noting that Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif had promptly offered an independent inquiry into recent incidents that have heightened tensions.
Despite the escalating rhetoric, Ambassador Gilani confirmed that communication channels between the two nations remain active. Recent talks between security officials from both sides illustrate a willingness to engage in discussions aimed at resolving the crisis. "Pakistan seeks peaceful relations with India, but it retains the right to respond to provocations," he reiterated, advocating for a measured approach in the face of heightened tensions.
Gilani also appealed for international involvement, suggesting that the United Nations or the Security Council could play a crucial role in de-escalating the situation. He expressed concern about the critical moment both countries face, warning that "within 2-3 days anything can happen."
Addressing the issue of nuclear capabilities, Gilani reiterated Pakistan's commitment to responsible nuclear stewardship, affirming that the country adheres to international agreements concerning nuclear arms, maintaining that its arsenal is solely for deterrent purposes.
In conclusion, Ambassador Gilani called for reason to prevail, urging all nations to denounce terrorism universally, describing it as a "dangerous threat to the world and the future." His remarks provide a window into Pakistan's diplomatic posture during this fraught period, emphasizing a preference for dialogue while remaining prepared to defend national interests if provoked.
The backdrop to this diplomatic exchange is marked by India's recent military strikes against Pakistan, which reportedly resulted in civilian casualties and have further strained bilateral relations. The strikes, referred to as "Operation Sindoor," have instigated a series of retaliatory measures, including the suspension of critical treaties and heightened military operations along the border.
As tensions continue to escalate, the situation remains precarious, with both nations navigating a complex landscape that could easily tip into broader conflict if not managed with care and diplomacy.
