McDonald’s Strengthens Value Menu to Attract Budget-Conscious Customers
In an effort to address rising competition and attract cost-conscious diners, McDonald’s is set to expand its U.S. value menu early next year. This move aims to appeal to customers affected by inflation and shifting dining habits.
Starting January 7, McDonald’s will introduce a new promotional offer: customers can purchase one full-priced item from a selected value menu and receive another item from the same menu for just $1. The menu will feature popular items such as the Sausage McMuffin, hash browns, McChicken sandwich, and small fries. This addition is designed to provide affordable choices for diners seeking quality meals on a budget.
Additionally, the $5 Meal Deal, introduced in June and extended through the end of this year, will continue to be available until next summer. This deal has been instrumental in attracting customers seeking bundled value offerings. The Chicago-based fast-food giant also plans to maintain localized promotions and in-app deals, including free drink offers, to retain its competitive edge.
The strategic focus on affordability comes as grocery price inflation has begun to ease, encouraging more consumers to prepare meals at home. According to recent government data, prices for food eaten at home rose by just 1.1% in October compared to the previous year, while prices for food consumed outside the home increased by 3.8%. This trend has posed a challenge for restaurants, including McDonald’s, to retain customers who are mindful of their spending.
Despite these challenges, McDonald’s has seen positive outcomes from its value-oriented strategies. The $5 Meal Deal and similar promotions helped the brand achieve a 0.3% increase in U.S. same-store sales during the third quarter of 2023, compared to the same period in 2022. This demonstrates the effectiveness of targeted pricing and menu options in retaining customers and driving sales amidst economic uncertainty.
As McDonald’s prepares to roll out its updated value menu and continue its promotions, the brand aims to solidify its position as a go-to choice for budget-friendly dining in the competitive fast-food market.
