Teachers Rally Against Controversial Law, Accuse Officials of Neglecting Demands

Thousands of teachers flooded the streets of Rabat on Thursday to express their categorical rejection of recent agreements between the Ministry of Education and teachers' unions. Organized by the National Teachers' Coordination, the "Dignity March" challenged deals that educators say fail to address their long-standing grievances.

The rally aimed to highlight demands for the full withdrawal of a controversial fundamental law governing the teaching profession, despite the government's recent announcement of a freeze on the law's implementation. Undeterred, protesters voiced their stance that the law must be scrapped entirely, emphasizing dissatisfaction with closed-door talks between officials and unions.

“We are here presenting the national march to express our strong opposition to the ongoing dialogues,” said one protester. “These discussions fail to address real issues and legitimate demands. Instead, they seem to prioritize self-interests, neglecting the concerns of teachers actively engaged in this struggle."

The demonstration comes weeks after the signing of an agreement intended to improve working conditions for educators. However, the National Teachers' Assembly labeled the deal "disgraceful," accusing centralized unions of belittling the teaching mission and eroding staff morale.

Protesters insist on the complete repeal of the fundamental law, submitting detailed demands directly to the Education Ministry. They argue that progress reports must translate into tangible actions to rebuild trust between beleaguered teachers and officials. Thursday's rally serves to amplify calls for ministry dialogues to yield concrete results.
