Advancements in Morocco's healthcare reform efforts
The Moroccan government continues its efforts to improve healthcare services, focusing on implementing the Royal project related to social protection, as stated by Prime Minister Aziz Akhannouch in Rabat. During a meeting dedicated to monitoring the implementation of the health system reform, Akhannouch emphasized the importance of ensuring high-quality public healthcare that meets the needs of the Moroccan people and strengthens the foundations of the social state as envisioned by King Mohammed VI.
He stressed the need for efficiency and prompt action to complete healthcare projects within the specified deadlines, ensuring that medical facilities provide quality services and easy access for patients. The meeting reviewed the progress made in the reform of the national health system, focusing on governance mechanisms, infrastructure development, sector digitalization, and increasing the number of healthcare professionals.
Key advancements included the establishment of governance bodies like the High Health Authority and the Moroccan Blood and Derivatives Agency, aimed at improving regulation and strengthening hospital management. Additionally, progress was made in expanding healthcare infrastructure, with ongoing construction and rehabilitation of six university hospitals and 79 regional and provincial hospitals, adding over 11,000 beds.
The meeting also highlighted the ongoing digital transformation of the healthcare system, with the implementation of an integrated information system for data collection and processing. A partnership agreement was set to enhance financial efficiency in this effort. Furthermore, the program to increase healthcare workforce numbers by 2030 is progressing, with significant advancements in addressing the current shortage of health professionals and improving training systems. The establishment of new medical and pharmacy faculties in Guelmim, Errachidia, and Beni-Mellal and the reform of training curricula are also key steps forward.
