Afghanistan earthquake kills over 900, Thousands injured
A devastating earthquake struck eastern Afghanistan, claiming over 900 lives and injuring more than 3,000 people, according to the National Disaster Management Authority. The hardest-hit area is Kunar province, with many remote villages reduced to rubble. Rescue operations are ongoing, and authorities warn that the death toll may rise further.
The magnitude 6 quake, followed by at least five strong aftershocks, hit late Sunday night, affecting the mountainous provinces of Nangarhar, Kunar, and Laghman. Survivors describe scenes of chaos and loss, with entire families buried under collapsed homes. Aid efforts are hampered by landslides and the inaccessibility of some areas.
Taliban officials confirmed initial figures of 800 dead and 2,500 injured in Kunar, with additional casualties in Nangarhar and Laghman. Local residents and volunteers have been tirelessly helping to recover bodies and provide assistance to the displaced.
International organizations have launched urgent appeals for donations, with initial funding from the UN emergency fund and support pledged by the UK. Afghanistan’s location on tectonic fault lines makes it particularly vulnerable to earthquakes, and the region has experienced several deadly quakes in the past century.
