Nearly two years after the devastating Al Haouz earthquake, Moroccan authorities report that 85% of damaged houses in Marrakech have been rebuilt or rehabilitated. The large-scale reconstruction program, launched in February 2024 under Royal Directives, has allowed thousands of families to return to their homes.

According to local officials, more than 2,600 houses have already been reconstructed or restored, in line with technical and anti-seismic standards. The completion rate is expected to reach 90% by the end of September and nearly 96% within two months. Authorities highlight that the pace of work has surpassed international experiences, where similar projects have taken at least three years.

In the Bab Doukkala neighborhood, most residents have already returned to homes rebuilt with respect for traditional Moroccan architecture. Families received monthly financial aid of 2,500 dirhams for rent and an additional grant of either 140,000 or 80,000 dirhams to cover reconstruction costs.

Several beneficiaries expressed relief and gratitude to HM King Mohammed VI for his ongoing support. “I was deeply moved to return to my home, completely destroyed by the earthquake but rebuilt thanks to the aid provided,” said Ahmed Armane, a resident of the medina.

Only 4% of affected households have yet to begin reconstruction, mainly due to inheritance disputes or technical issues. Legal procedures have been initiated to resolve these cases.

Despite the challenges, authorities consider the progress remarkable, pointing to the extensive preparatory work, including clearing debris from over 2,300 collapsed houses and managing building permits, before reconstruction could begin.
