Ambitious National Bus Overhaul Aims to Transform Urban Mobility
Addressing urban transportation challenges in major cities, Interior Minister Abdelouafi Laftit acknowledged on Monday before the House of Representatives that current services fall short of Moroccan citizens' aspirations. To rectify this situation, an ambitious new program has been launched for the period 2024-2029.
"The new program, backed by a budget of nearly 10 billion dirhams, targets over 32 cities across Morocco with a total fleet of 3,500 new buses," Laftit stated. "These investments cover vehicle fleet components, maintenance, ticketing systems, management support systems, and bus depot facilities."
The Interior Ministry and local authorities will acquire these buses over the next three years, with a rollout beginning in major cities before expanding nationwide. The overarching goal is to guarantee high-quality public transportation for all citizens.
Laftit emphasized that the undertaking represents a significant financial commitment by the government to modernize and expand urban bus networks. By systematically replacing aging fleets with new vehicles adhering to stricter emissions standards, the initiative aims to provide a more environmentally sustainable and commuter-friendly transit experience.
Furthermore, the integration of intelligent transportation systems promises to streamline operations, enhance service reliability, and improve customer information. Complemented by investments in bus facilities and maintenance infrastructure, the program lays the groundwork for a comprehensive revitalization of urban mobility across the kingdom.
With Morocco's major centers grappling with rising congestion and air pollution, this multi-billion dirham overhaul represents a pivotal endeavor to cultivate more livable cities through robust public transportation solutions. As urban populations continue to swell, enhancing the accessibility, efficiency, and appeal of bus travel has become an economic and environmental imperative for sustainable development nationwide.
