Argentina’s president Milei targeted with projectiles but unharmed
Argentine President Javier Milei was attacked with stones and bottles on Wednesday during a political tour in the outskirts of Buenos Aires. Security forces swiftly evacuated him from the scene, and he was reported unharmed, according to the presidential spokesperson.
The incident occurred while Milei was campaigning for his party ahead of the legislative elections scheduled for October 26. Protesters expressed anger over alleged corruption involving his sister, Karina Milei, after leaked audios suggested she diverted funds intended for disability programs. Milei dismissed the accusations as false and vowed to pursue legal action against those responsible.
Presidential spokesperson Manuel Adorni condemned the attack, blaming supporters of former president Cristina Kirchner, currently under house arrest. He described the assault as “pure Kirchnerism and a model of violence from the past.”
The confrontation led to scuffles, during which at least one female supporter of Milei was injured and taken away by ambulance. Demonstrators carried signs demanding “Milei out of Lomas de Zamora,” reflecting growing discontent in the area.
The attack comes at a sensitive time for Milei, whose popularity will be tested in the upcoming elections. While his economic policies have curbed inflation, they have also drawn criticism for deep spending cuts, particularly in social aid programs for vulnerable groups.
