Armenia announces high-level talks with Azerbaijan and the US in Washington
Armenia announced on Wednesday that its Prime Minister, Nikol Pashinyan, will travel to the United States for a summit with U.S. President Donald Trump and Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev. The meeting, scheduled for August 7 and 8 in Washington, is aimed at advancing long-standing peace efforts between Armenia and Azerbaijan.
"On August 7 and 8, Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan will make a working visit to the United States," Armenia’s government said in a statement.
While in Washington, Pashinyan will meet with President Trump to strengthen the strategic partnership between Armenia and the United States. A trilateral meeting involving President Aliyev will also take place, focusing on peace, development, and economic cooperation in the Caucasus region.
This marks the latest attempt to move forward after years of conflict between the two former Soviet republics over the disputed Nagorno-Karabakh region. The last face-to-face talks between Pashinyan and Aliyev took place on July 10 in Abu Dhabi but yielded no concrete progress.
In March 2025, both countries appeared close to a breakthrough after lengthy negotiations, but Azerbaijan later submitted new demands, including constitutional amendments from Armenia to officially renounce any territorial claims over Karabakh.
The two nations fought two major wars over Nagorno-Karabakh, with Azerbaijan regaining full control of the region during a lightning offensive in 2023.
