At least eleven people were stabbed on Saturday during a violent incident at a Walmart supermarket in Traverse City, Michigan, authorities confirmed.

According to Grand Traverse County Sheriff Michael Shea, a 42-year-old suspect is in custody. “Based on the information we have, this appears to be a random act. The victims were not preselected,” Shea stated. The suspect, a Michigan resident, reportedly acted alone and used a folding knife.

The Munson Medical Center confirmed on social media that eleven victims were being treated. As of late Saturday, six were in critical condition, and five others sustained serious injuries. At least three victims required surgery. The injured include six men and five women.

Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer said she is in contact with local officials regarding the “horrific incident.” Michigan State Police reported that officers were dispatched in the late afternoon following emergency calls from the Walmart store.

Eyewitness Julia Martell, 30, told The New York Times she heard screams and saw a man running with a knife in the store’s pharmacy aisle. “He was pushing and stabbing people as he moved through the store,” she said, describing scenes of blood and panic.

Sheriff Shea noted the attack began near the checkout area and described such violence as “extremely rare” in the region. He also said that bystanders helped apprehend the suspect.

Traverse City is a popular tourist destination on the shores of Lake Michigan. FBI Deputy Director Dan Bongino confirmed that federal agents would provide “all necessary support” to the Grand Traverse County Sheriff’s Office in the ongoing investigation.
