Azerbaijan to Enhance Earthquake Resistance Systems in Buildings

Azerbaijan is set to implement new earthquake resistance devices aimed at mitigating the impact of destructive earthquakes, according to Azer Gasimzadeh, the director of the Earthquake Research Center at the Azerbaijan University of Architecture and Construction.

These new devices will be installed in buildings to monitor and ensure their resilience against seismic activity. Gasimzadeh explained to local media that the systems will be placed in strategic, high-rise buildings and facilities. Additionally, plans for a dedicated monitoring center are expected to be established this year.

Gurban Yetirmishli, the director of the Republican Center for Seismological Services at the National Academy of Sciences of Azerbaijan, emphasized that Azerbaijan is located in a seismically active zone, making the recurrence of strong earthquakes "inevitable."

A seismic hazard map of Azerbaijan has already been developed, and a similar seismic map of Baku's neighborhoods could soon be created, as proposed by the Ministry of Emergency Situations.

The country has several seismically active regions, including the Caspian Sea, the southern Talysh Mountains, the Ganja-Dashkasan area, and the Shamakhi-Ismayilli and Shaki-Zagatala regions. Since 2024, Baku has experienced earthquakes with magnitudes up to 4.8 on the Richter scale.
