Bouskoura: dismantling of a national food fraud network
Moroccan gendarmes in Bouskoura have dismantled a large criminal network involved in the falsification of expiration dates on food products. The suspects were allegedly modifying expiry labels to resell spoiled goods across the country, posing a serious threat to public health.
According to local media reports, the network collected expired or damaged food items — including canned goods, sweets, sauces, and other products — from merchants seeking to dispose of them. Instead of being destroyed, these items were purchased cheaply and transported to a secret warehouse on the outskirts of Bouskoura, near Casablanca.
Inside the warehouse, organized operations were carried out to erase and replace the original manufacturing and expiration dates, giving the appearance that the products were new and safe for consumption.
Thanks to this method, the network managed to distribute large quantities of adulterated goods in markets across several Moroccan cities, bypassing official health inspections. The products were resold to retailers looking for quick profits, endangering consumers’ health.
The arrest of the alleged ringleader marks a major blow to food fraud operations in Morocco. Authorities seized several tons of counterfeit food products during the raid, highlighting the scale of the criminal activities.
This case reignites the debate on food traceability and the effectiveness of inspection systems, as fraudulent networks continue to exploit regulatory loopholes and profit-driven motives.
