Casablanca airport expansion: Morocco builds its gateway to the world
Morocco’s ambitions to become a global aviation hub are taking flight as groundwork begins for a new terminal at Mohammed V International Airport in Casablanca. This transformative project, under the National Airports Office’s (ONDA) “Airports 2030” strategy, aims to elevate the airport’s capacity to 35 million passengers annually, solidifying its position as one of Africa’s largest and most strategically significant hubs.
Major investment in Morocco’s aviation future
With an estimated investment of MAD 15 billion ($1.5 billion), the new terminal represents one of Morocco’s most ambitious infrastructure projects in recent years. ONDA confirmed that the terminal will increase annual capacity by 20 million passengers, positioning Casablanca as a critical junction connecting Europe, Africa, and the Americas.
The construction phase follows months of technical studies conducted by international experts with experience in major airport projects in cities like London, Madrid, and Geneva. Moroccan construction firm SOTAM has been awarded the groundwork contract, which will last eight months and pave the way for full-scale construction.
A modern vision for connectivity and sustainability
The new terminal embodies Morocco’s forward-thinking aviation policy, which prioritizes connectivity, technological innovation, and environmental sustainability. Designed to withstand climate challenges, the terminal will feature advanced digital travel experiences, high energy performance, and eco-conscious infrastructure.
A high-speed train station will also be integrated into the site, offering 30-minute connections to Rabat and quick journeys to Marrakech, further enhancing Morocco’s intercity connectivity.
Preparing for the 2030 FIFA World Cup and beyond
This expansion comes as Morocco prepares to co-host the 2030 FIFA World Cup, reflecting the country’s readiness to welcome global travelers. However, the project extends beyond this event. It represents a long-term strategy to enhance Morocco’s role in international air traffic, connecting people and markets across continents.
Royal Air Maroc (RAM)’s growing global reach complements this effort, reinforcing Casablanca’s status as a continental air hub. ONDA’s meticulous partner selection process, which attracted 27 consortia from Morocco and abroad, highlights the emphasis on quality and expertise in executing this transformative project.
With construction now underway, Casablanca’s new terminal signals Morocco’s bold intent to shape the future of global aviation.
