China welcomes ICJ’s “positive” opinion on climate reparations
China expressed strong support on Thursday for the advisory opinion issued by the International Court of Justice (ICJ), which opens the door for countries suffering from climate change impacts to seek reparations from nations that fail to meet their climate obligations.
“This advisory opinion reflects the long-standing position and demands of many developing countries, including China. It is of positive significance for preserving and advancing international cooperation on climate issues,” stated Guo Jiakun, spokesperson for China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, during a press briefing.
The ICJ, the highest judicial authority of the United Nations, concluded that countries not fulfilling their climate responsibilities could be held legally accountable and required to compensate the most affected nations. This move is seen as a landmark in the push for climate justice, particularly for vulnerable nations in the Global South.
The ruling follows an initiative led by Vanuatu and supported by a coalition of island nations, who argue that wealthy industrialized countries have disproportionately contributed to global warming while poorer states bear the brunt of the damage.
China’s endorsement of the ICJ opinion signals a strengthening of alliances between emerging economies and vulnerable countries advocating for climate accountability on the international stage.
