CIA workforce overhaul amid Trump's national security focus
The Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) has reportedly offered buyouts to its entire workforce, aligning with priorities from the Trump administration. This move, which also freezes job offers for candidates already conditionally selected, aims to better fit the agency’s focus on issues such as combating drug cartels, trade wars, and challenging China.
In addition to the buyout offers, the CIA is reexamining its workforce to ensure its alignment with the national security goals of the administration. Specific roles and areas of expertise may be limited in terms of who can take up the buyout, and some candidates may have their offers rescinded due to misalignment with new agency objectives.
The decision is part of broader efforts by the Trump administration to reshape the federal workforce, which has included the removal of civil servants and the installation of political appointees. Last week, the White House offered buyouts to federal employees, and the inclusion of the CIA in this initiative appears to be a more recent development.
Although the agency did not disclose specific budget figures or employee numbers, these moves align with Project 2025, a conservative strategy promoting government downsizing and staffing shifts.
The CIA’s transformation focuses more on the Western Hemisphere, with an emphasis on countries not traditionally viewed as US adversaries. This change represents an ongoing restructuring as the agency realigns with national security priorities under the current administration.
