Female tbourida thrills audiences at moussem Moulay Abdellah Amghar
El Jadida – The inclusion of female Tbourida performances in the Moussem Moulay Abdellah Amghar has become a highlight of this year’s festivities, adding a distinctive touch to one of Morocco’s most important religious and cultural events.
Each day, three all-female sorbas (teams of riders) take to the tracks of the first and second “mehrek,” showcasing their skill, precision, and vibrant energy. Dressed in traditional attire and adopting their own style, these horsewomen captivate audiences with synchronized gunfire salutes and expert horse handling — a display that rivals that of their male counterparts.
Their participation not only entertains but also underlines the courage, discipline, and technical mastery required for this demanding equestrian art. It reflects the growing role of women in safeguarding Morocco’s intangible heritage and inspiring younger generations to embrace the love of horses and traditional sports.
One of the leading figures, Zahia Abou Layth, the first “allama” of Doukkala, began riding as a child alongside her father. In 2003, she formed her own all-female sorba, which has since earned a loyal following. Zahia emphasizes discipline, respect for the horses, and camaraderie among riders.
Another participant, Nora El Badaouii, attending the Moussem for the third time, described the event as an exceptional platform to promote Tbourida and celebrate Morocco’s cultural diversity.
Under the High Patronage of HM King Mohammed VI, the 2025 edition runs until August 16, offering not only equestrian spectacles but also religious ceremonies, cultural debates, falconry demonstrations, and artistic evenings — a true celebration of Doukkala’s centuries-old traditions.
