France: “French Face of ISIS” Emilie König sent to criminal court
French jihadist Emilie König, once described as a “true icon” of ISIS propaganda, has been referred to a special criminal court for criminal terrorist conspiracy, according to judicial sources reported by AFP on Monday.
This referral, decided on September 16, follows the National Anti-Terrorism Prosecutor’s Office (PNAT) recommendation from July 29, which accused König of being one of the most influential female figures of the Islamic State.
Originally from Lorient, Brittany, König, 40, spent a decade in Syria, including five years in detention, and has been imprisoned in France since July 2022.
The PNAT alleges that she remained in ISIS-controlled territory during the group’s worst atrocities, serving as a recruiter, propagandist, and intermediary for foreign fighters.
In 2014, the United Nations listed her among the world’s most dangerous combatants, citing videos where she trained with firearms, encouraged attacks in France, and urged violence against military institutions and soldiers’ spouses.
Another woman, Sterenn D., will also stand trial for terrorist conspiracy, accused of providing financial and logistical support to König while remaining in France.
