France is set to enhance the role of its embassies in Latin America in the fight against drug trafficking, according to Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot. In an interview with Journal du Dimanche, Barrot emphasized that cooperation with drug-producing countries has already yielded results but remains insufficient.

To strengthen these efforts, France plans to increase specialized staff in embassies by 20% and triple operational resources devoted to combating organized crime. Additionally, a Regional Academy Against Organized Crime will be established in the Dominican Republic in 2026 to train 250 investigators, magistrates, customs officers, and financial analysts annually from partner countries.

The minister is currently in Colombia for the fourth EU-CELAC summit, which brings together the 27 EU member states and 33 Latin American and Caribbean nations. Prior to this, he visited Mexico alongside French President Emmanuel Macron, signing a customs cooperation framework aimed at curbing drug trafficking.

Barrot stressed that the French Foreign Ministry is fully mobilized to contribute to the fight against drugs, amid rising cocaine trafficking and consumption in France in recent years.
