Gaza Hospitals Face Critical Safety Crisis, UN Human Rights Commissioner Warns

UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Turk warned Tuesday that hospitals in the Gaza Strip, meant to serve as sanctuaries, have instead become hazardous environments for Palestinians seeking medical care. Speaking amid ongoing regional tensions, Turk emphasized the critical importance of protecting medical facilities during armed conflicts.

"As if the relentless bombing and the dire humanitarian situation in Gaza were not enough, the one sanctuary where Palestinians should have felt safe in fact became a death trap," Turk stated, highlighting the gravity of the situation. He stressed that all parties involved must respect the protected status of healthcare facilities, underscoring this as a fundamental principle of warfare.

The Commissioner's statement draws attention to the mounting concerns over civilian infrastructure in conflict zones, particularly the vulnerability of medical facilities that should remain neutral and protected spaces during military operations. His remarks reflect growing international alarm over the deteriorating conditions in Gaza's healthcare system.
