Greece will deliver American liquefied natural gas (LNG) to Ukraine this winter, providing crucial support as the country’s gas infrastructure continues to suffer from Russian strikes, according to officials from both nations.

The Greek state-owned gas company DEPA and Ukraine’s Naftogaz signed a memorandum of understanding for gas deliveries covering the period from December 2025 to March 2026. The agreement was formalized in Athens during a meeting between Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

“This deal represents a key step in strengthening regional energy cooperation and European energy security,” the joint statement read. The arrangement will help Ukraine endure a particularly harsh winter.

Mitsotakis described the project as creating a safe energy corridor running from southern Greece to Ukraine, facilitated by the Alexandroupolis port, which will serve as a major hub for LNG imports. Zelensky thanked the United States for supporting the initiative, calling it an essential part of Ukraine’s winter energy plan.

The agreement also aligns with the EU’s plan to phase out Russian gas imports by 2027, aiming to reduce Moscow’s revenue streams used to finance the war in Ukraine.

Beyond energy, Greece and Ukraine aim to expand defense and cybersecurity cooperation, including joint maritime exercises and the development of unmanned naval systems.
