Houthi missile hits Israel’s Ben Gurion airport, flights disrupted
A missile launched by Yemen’s Houthi rebels struck the perimeter of Israel’s Ben Gurion International Airport, damaging infrastructure and halting air traffic. The Israeli military confirmed its defense system failed to intercept the missile, despite multiple attempts. The attack injured eight people, as reported by paramedics.
The Houthis, who oppose Israel’s actions in Gaza, claimed responsibility for the missile strike. The ongoing conflict in Gaza, marked by over 18 months of Israeli attacks, has resulted in significant casualties, including deaths from starvation due to the Israeli siege. The Houthis’ spokesperson warned airlines that the airport was no longer safe for travel.
The attack caused a temporary suspension of flights, with some being rerouted, and led to the closure of airport entrances. Train services to the airport were also halted. Sirens sounded across central Israel, sending many into shelters.
The missile struck a road within the airport’s perimeter, with debris seen on nearby roads. In response, Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz vowed retaliation, invoking the Torah's principle of severe retribution.
Benny Gantz, former defense minister, linked the attack to Iran, accusing Tehran of supporting the missile strike. Opposition leader Yair Golan pointed out the hardships faced by Israelis, including the economic toll and the ongoing war, which began after an attack by Hamas in October 2023. Golan called for an end to the war and the return of captives.
Despite daily U.S. air raids on Yemen, the Houthis continue their offensive. U.S. forces launched several strikes on Yemeni territories, though the impact of these attacks, including casualties, is unclear.
