Innovative military technology enhances urban disaster preparedness in Casarrubios del Monte

The municipality of Casarrubios del Monte has emerged as the focal point of an innovative project spearheaded by the Air and Space Army. This initiative harnesses military drones and advanced geospatial technology to create a digital twin of the town. The primary objective is to anticipate natural disasters, improve urban management, and bolster public safety by merging technological innovation with defense for the benefit of the community.

Utilizing remotely piloted aircraft systems (RPAS), equipped with LiDAR technology and high-resolution digital cameras, the project will capture geospatial data over an expanse of more than 680 hectares. This data collection aims to enhance the municipality's resilience against potential disasters, particularly following the devastating flood events caused by the DANA phenomenon in 2023.

The project promises to deliver cutting-edge cartographic and geospatial products, including digital surface models, orthophotos, point clouds, and digital twins. These advancements will enable Casarrubios del Monte to simulate flooding scenarios, effectively plan evacuation measures, and conduct precise measurements of critical infrastructure such as roads, bridges, and buildings.

The integration of these geospatial data sets will significantly enhance urban planning and emergency management. The digital twin will provide an immersive visualization of the urban environment, optimizing decision-making during critical situations and reinforcing safety through calculated visual fields for surveillance installations.

Originally conceived to support the Armed Forces, the deployment of this technology in Casarrubios del Monte exemplifies how military innovation can directly benefit civilian society. The project also includes plans for utilizing these geospatial products in troop training, tactical movement planning, and strategic infrastructure analysis.

This initiative reinforces the mission of the Air and Space Army to deliver precise cartography, showcasing its commitment to technological innovation. Not only does it enhance the community's resilience to extreme phenomena, but it also opens new avenues for urban territorial management. This comprehensive approach, blending military resources with civic needs, marks a significant milestone in using public assets for common good, demonstrating how the Air Force can actively contribute to the safety and modernization of cities.
