Morocco nears acquisition of Bombardier Global 6500 electronic warfare jets

Morocco is reportedly advancing toward the acquisition of Bombardier Global 6500 jets adapted for electronic warfare and intelligence missions. This move marks a significant step in the country's evolving defense strategy, emphasizing its intent to strengthen its Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance (ISR) capabilities.

Recent reports, particularly from Defense Atlas, indicate that a prototype of the Global 6500 configured for electronic intelligence has appeared in a context that suggests strong Moroccan interest. Known for its long-range and endurance exceeding 12,000 kilometers and capable of flying for up to 18 hours non-stop the aircraft supports advanced sensor, radar, and signal interception (SIGINT) systems. Its design allows further customization, including external antennas, optical and radar systems, and onboard analyst workstations.

A key moment that reinforced these developments occurred at the Marrakech Air Show 2024, where a model of the Bombardier Global 6500 equipped for electronic warfare and painted in Moroccan colors was showcased. The aircraft was featured in a promotional video demonstrating joint operational scenarios with Moroccan F-16 fighters and armed drones like the Wing Loong II and Bayraktar TB2. This presentation highlighted Morocco's aim to integrate the aircraft into its existing air force infrastructure with high interoperability.

Moreover, Israeli defense company Elta Systems has recently opened a local branch in Morocco, bolstering speculation about a potential technology transfer. This includes possibilities for local maintenance, sensor assembly, and technical support. According to FAR News, two aircraft are reportedly in the preparation phase, to be equipped with systems from L3Harris and Elta, enhancing Morocco’s capabilities in strategic intelligence, maritime surveillance, and ground threat mapping.

This prospective acquisition aligns with Morocco’s broader military modernization plan, which includes long-range strike systems such as HIMARS (equipped with ATACMS missiles), Predator Hawk, and LORA systems. These new additions reflect a strategic shift toward independent, precision-strike capabilities. Within this doctrine, ISR aircraft like the Global 6500 play a critical role in identifying deep targets, intercepting communications, analyzing enemy deployments, and guiding real-time precision strikes.

Should this deal be finalized, Morocco would join a select group of nations including the United States, Canada, and Germany that have converted business jets into advanced military surveillance platforms. An official announcement of the procurement is believed to be imminent.
