Morocco has achieved a significant milestone in the global blueberry market, climbing from seventh to fourth place in export rankings within a single year, according to Agraria Pe. This rapid ascent reflects the country’s strategic efforts to position itself as a key player in the industry.

In 2024, Morocco exported a record 83,000 tons of blueberries, a staggering leap from just 636 tons in 2009. This growth, averaging 43% annually, highlights the nation’s ability to leverage its natural advantages, adopt modern farming techniques, and make targeted investments to develop a competitive and export-focused industry.

Natural advantages and strategic location

Morocco’s favorable climate is one of its greatest assets for blueberry production. Mild winters, warm dry summers, and fertile soils in regions like Souss and Oriental enable multiple harvests each year. These conditions produce high-quality fruit with excellent flavor and firmness, catering to the demands of international markets.

The country’s proximity to Europe provides another edge, allowing fresh blueberries to be transported swiftly to major markets such as Spain, the United Kingdom, and Germany. This reduces shipping costs and ensures produce reaches consumers at peak freshness.

From small-scale crop to export powerhouse

Once a minor crop in the 1990s, Morocco’s blueberry industry has undergone a remarkable transformation. The sector is now organized and export-driven, benefiting from investments in advanced agricultural technology and expansion into new production zones such as Dakhla and the Atlas Mountains. These developments are expected to further extend the harvest season and increase supply for existing and emerging markets.

Global context and future prospects

In 2024, global blueberry exports totaled one million tons, valued at $6.73 billion. Peru led the market with 31% of exports, followed by Chile, Spain, Morocco (8%), and the United States (7%).

As Moroccan exporters continue to adopt a professional approach and explore opportunities in Europe, Asia, and the Middle East, the country is poised to solidify its position as a global leader in blueberry exports.
