Morocco Takes the Lead: Pioneering Digital Transformation in Africa
Morocco has emerged as the leading performer in Africa for Information and Communication Technology (ICT) development, according to the 2023 International Telecommunication Union (ITU) ICT Development Index.
With a score of 85.1 points, Morocco claimed the top position in continental rankings, surpassing Mauritius (81.7) and Seychelles (80.9). South Africa (80.5) and Libya (79.4) completed the top five.
The ITU assesses 169 countries using 10 indicators, including mobile and fixed broadband prices, internet usage, and the adoption of next-generation technologies.
Morocco excelled in key access metrics, achieving 99.3% population coverage for 3G and 99.1% for 4G. Over 88% of individuals now use the internet, and 86.2% of households are online.
By mid-2023, mobile subscription penetration reached a record high of 54.11 million. The number of internet users exceeded 36 million, according to the national ICT regulator ANRT, reflecting Morocco's robust 146.2% mobile penetration rate.
This surge in digital transformation is attributed to the government's sustained focus on expanding connectivity and implementing literacy programs. While the United Arab Emirates topped the global rankings with a perfect score of 100 points, Morocco's regional neighbors, Mauritius and Seychelles, also featured prominently in Africa's digital elite, underscoring North African leadership in ICT development on the continent. With ambitious national strategies and regional cooperation, Morocco is well-positioned to accelerate its digital economy ambitions.
