At least 194 people lost their lives and 28 others were injured within 24 hours after torrential monsoon rains triggered flash floods and landslides across northern Pakistan, according to the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA).

The northwestern province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa was the hardest hit, with 180 reported deaths. Nine additional fatalities were recorded in Pakistan-administered Kashmir, while the mountainous region of Gilgit-Baltistan confirmed five victims.

The heavy rains caused homes to collapse and infrastructure to be severely damaged, including roads, bridges, schools, water reservoirs, and farmland, officials said. “Several people are still missing, and rescue operations are ongoing despite harsh conditions,” explained Faizullah Faraq, spokesperson for the Gilgit-Baltistan government.

Pakistan remains one of the countries most vulnerable to climate change, with its population of 255 million increasingly exposed to extreme weather events. Since late June, monsoon-related disasters have killed more than 500 people across the country, according to official NDMA figures.
