Prague to ban electric scooter rentals amid “Chaos” on city sidewalks
Starting January 2026, Prague will ban the rental of electric scooters, following in the footsteps of cities such as Paris and Madrid. The decision was approved by the city council on Monday after growing complaints from residents about safety risks and clutter caused by scooters blocking sidewalks and pedestrian zones.
Deputy Mayor Zdeněk Hřib, who also leads the Czech Pirate Party, said the move aims to “free up public space” and end the “uncontrolled traffic” created by scooters, often used more as tourist attractions than genuine transport options.
The Czech capital, home to 1.4 million people and welcoming over 8 million tourists annually, will continue to allow shared bicycles, which will now be subject to stricter parking rules. However, electric scooters will be completely removed from shared mobility programs.
Operators like Lime have expressed disappointment, arguing that in cities where there is a “constructive dialogue” with authorities, scooters can coexist effectively with other forms of transport.
