Severe thunderstorms to strike Moroccan regions amid ongoing heatwaves
The General Directorate of Meteorology in Morocco has issued an orange-level weather alert, warning of strong thunderstorms expected to hit several regions of the country today. The storms, accompanied by heavy rain, strong winds, and possible hail, are forecast to bring rainfall ranging from 15 to 30 millimeters.
Affected regions
The provinces expected to experience these severe weather conditions include Taza, Taourirt, Guercif, Jerada, Ifrane, Khenifra, Khouribga, Fquih Ben Salah, Beni Mellal, and Azilal. The warning is in effect from 2 p.m. to 10 p.m. today.
A season of extreme weather
Morocco has been grappling with increasingly unstable weather patterns in recent weeks, ranging from heatwaves and sandstorms to thunderstorms and strong winds. Temperatures have soared to over 44 degrees Celsius in many regions, prompting residents to seek relief at beaches, lakes, and swimming pools.
This summer’s trend of rising temperatures and minimal rainfall has compounded challenges, particularly in inland areas. Moroccan meteorological authorities have been actively raising public awareness through TV and radio broadcasts in Arabic, Darija, and Amazigh to ensure people are well-informed about upcoming heatwaves and how to stay safe.
Looking ahead
With above-average temperatures expected to persist throughout the summer, the country is bracing for continued extreme weather conditions. The combination of high heat and sporadic storms underscores the urgent need for preparedness and vigilance.
