Soufiane El Bakkali solidifies his dominance in steeplechase at Monaco Diamond League
Moroccan athlete Soufiane El Bakkali showcased his exceptional talent by winning the men's 3,000 meters steeplechase at the Monaco Diamond League, one of the premier events in international athletics. El Bakkali finished with a time of 8 minutes and 3.18 seconds, outpacing Japan’s Ryuji Miura, who claimed second place with a time of 8:03.43. Kenyan runner Edmond Serem secured third with a finish of 8:04.00, while fellow Moroccan Salaheddine Benyazide came in fourth at 8:06.44.
This victory further cements El Bakkali's status as one of the world's leading steeplechase competitors. He is the reigning Olympic and world champion in this event, known for his strategic racing and impressive finishing speed.
El Bakkali has made history by winning gold medals at both the Tokyo 2020 and Paris 2024 Olympic Games, becoming the first man since the 1930s to successfully defend his Olympic title in the 3,000 meters steeplechase. Additionally, he is a two-time World Champion, having triumphed in 2022 and 2023, thereby challenging Kenya's long-standing dominance in the discipline.
His personal best of 7 minutes and 56.68 seconds, achieved in Rabat in 2023, ranks him among the fastest steeplechase runners in history. El Bakkali's tactical approach, marked by conserving energy early in the race followed by a powerful sprint in the final lap, has earned him the reputation as one of the greatest steeplechasers ever.
