Trump Criticizes Zelenskyy for Blocking Peace Talks with Russia

Former US President Donald Trump has publicly criticized Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy for rejecting any peace deal that involves conceding Crimea to Russia. According to Trump, Zelenskyy's firm stance is damaging ongoing negotiations aimed at ending the conflict between Ukraine and Russia.

Zelenskyy, during remarks ahead of a meeting in London with American and European officials, reaffirmed that Ukraine would not surrender any of its territory. "This is our land Ukrainian land," he declared, in response to reports suggesting the Trump team might support recognizing Crimea as Russian territory.

Posting on Truth Social, Trump claimed that Zelenskyy’s statement worsened tensions. He noted that Russia annexed Crimea in 2014 without a military confrontation and warned that continued resistance could prolong the war. "He can choose peace now or fight for years and risk losing everything," Trump said.

Meanwhile, US Vice President JD Vance stated during a visit to India that the US had made a clear proposal to both Russia and Ukraine. He emphasized that both sides would need to compromise, implying potential land exchanges.

In London, discussions continued among officials from the US, UK, France, Germany, and Ukraine. Although US Secretary of State Marco Rubio cancelled his attendance, talks proceeded at a technical level. Zelenskyy acknowledged the emotional tone of the meeting but expressed hope for progress. He highlighted that both the American and European sides shared their perspectives.

Trump’s envoy Keith Kellogg, following talks with Zelenskyy’s chief of staff Andriy Yermak, expressed optimism about peace efforts. He reiterated Trump’s strategy of prioritizing peace and American interests.

British officials downplayed the impact of Rubio’s absence and reiterated their commitment to a lasting peace in Ukraine. Negotiators focused on proposals by Trump’s special envoy Steve Witkoff, which reportedly included US recognition of Russia’s claim to Crimea, lifting sanctions on Moscow, and barring Ukraine from joining NATO.

These proposals were met with backlash in Kyiv, with critics labeling them as unfair. Analyst Mattia Nelles warned that offering sanctions relief could empower Russia while weakening Ukraine, a scenario that is unlikely to gain support in Europe or among Ukrainian leaders.
