Donald Trump’s frustration with Russian President Vladimir Putin is mounting as the conflict in Ukraine continues unabated, despite the U.S. president’s campaign promise to resolve it. Speaking on Thursday, Trump condemned the latest wave of Russian attacks on Ukraine, calling them "sickening" following airstrikes on Kyiv that claimed at least 16 lives.

In response, Trump confirmed plans to impose new sanctions on Moscow, acknowledging uncertainty about their effectiveness. "I don’t know if it will have an impact, but we’re going to do it," he said. The president also revealed that his special envoy, Steve Witkoff, currently in Israel, will soon travel to Russia for further discussions. Witkoff has previously met with Putin multiple times.

Trump issued an ultimatum to Russia, demanding an end to hostilities in Ukraine by next week or face severe economic penalties. "We will impose sanctions. I don’t know if sanctions bother him [Putin]," Trump remarked.

U.S. targets oil revenues and India’s ties with Russia

The U.S. administration is exploring secondary sanctions, which would target countries purchasing Russian oil or arms. India, a major buyer of Russian hydrocarbons and weaponry, came under particular criticism from Trump, who suggested that such trade sustains Russia’s war machine.

This marks a stark shift in tone for Trump, who had sought a dramatic rapprochement with Putin upon re-entering office in January, believing his personal rapport with the Kremlin leader could bring the Ukraine war to a swift conclusion. However, that promise has yet to materialize, leaving Trump’s diplomatic strategy under scrutiny.
