Tsunami warning issued for Puerto Rico after 7.6 magnitude earthquake in the Caribbean
On Saturday, a powerful earthquake of magnitude 7.6 struck the Caribbean Sea, setting off a tsunami warning for Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands, as confirmed by the United States Geological Survey (USGS). The earthquake occurred around 18:25 (GMT -5) approximately 30 kilometers north of Honduras.
The seismic activity raised immediate concerns for Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands, both of which are now at risk of experiencing hazardous ocean fluctuations and powerful ocean currents. These dangerous conditions are expected to pose significant risks to coastal areas, beaches, ports, and nearby waters.
According to the USGS, the earthquake's impact on the region may lead to fluctuations in sea levels and strong ocean currents, posing serious threats to those in coastal areas. As part of the tsunami alert, the American Tsunami Warning Center further warned that the dangerous fluctuations in the sea level and strong currents could reach Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands approximately two hours following the earthquake’s occurrence.
The warning serves as a reminder of the ongoing seismic threats in the Caribbean region and the need for swift and coordinated responses to such natural disasters. Residents and tourists in these areas are urged to stay alert and follow safety guidelines issued by local authorities to avoid any potential harm.
As the region braces for possible tsunami waves, it highlights the importance of preparedness and early warning systems to mitigate the effects of natural disasters. These systems aim to provide timely alerts to those in high-risk areas, enabling them to take the necessary precautions to protect their lives and property.
