Washington designates four Iran-backed militias as terrorist organizations
The United States announced on Wednesday that it has added four Iran-backed militias to its list of foreign terrorist organizations. According to the State Department, the groups include Harakat al-Nujaba, Kataib Sayyed al-Shuhada, Harakat Ansar Allah al-Awfiya, and Kataib al-Imam Ali.
These factions, already previously identified by Washington as terrorist entities, are accused of carrying out attacks against the U.S. embassy in Baghdad as well as coalition bases in Iraq. Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that the groups frequently used front names to conceal their involvement in such operations.
The move underscores ongoing U.S. concerns over Iran’s influence in Iraq and the wider region. American officials maintain that Tehran’s support for armed groups poses a direct threat to regional stability and to U.S. interests in the Middle East.
