Wife of fugitive dezi freeman urges surrender amid police manhunt
The wife of a fugitive accused of killing two police officers in Porepunkah has publicly urged her husband to surrender, expressing “deep sorrow” for the tragic loss.
Dezi Freeman, also known as Desmond Filby, fled into the bush on Tuesday following a deadly confrontation at a property approximately 300 km northeast of Melbourne. He is accused of killing Detective Leading Senior Constable Neal Thompson, 59, and Senior Constable Vadim de Waart, 35.
Over 450 police officers have been deployed to search the rugged terrain, including caves, disused mines, and dense bushland. Severe weather, including heavy rain and blizzard-like conditions, has complicated the operation.
Amalia Freeman, his wife, offered her full support to Victoria Police and condemned her husband’s actions. She urged him to contact authorities and surrender safely, and appealed to anyone with information on his whereabouts to come forward.
Authorities have received multiple reported sightings of Freeman since he went on the run, though none have been confirmed. Meanwhile, a 61-year-old man in Bright was arrested on weapons and cannabis charges, with potential links to Freeman under investigation.
The search continues with police command posts relocated to better coordinate operations. Freeman, believed to be a “sovereign citizen” rejecting government authority, is considered highly dangerous due to his survival skills and martial arts training.
