Zelensky says US and Europe preparing security pact for Ukraine
Ukraine’s Western partners will formalize security guarantees for Kyiv within the next ten days in order to prevent any future Russian aggression if a peace deal is reached with Moscow, President Volodymyr Zelensky announced on Monday in Washington.
“Security guarantees will likely be agreed upon by our partners, and we will see more details as everything is put in writing and officially signed within a week to ten days,” Zelensky said after talks at the White House with U.S. President Donald Trump and European leaders.
The Ukrainian leader stressed the importance of Washington’s involvement: “It is important that the United States sends a clear signal that it will be among the countries assisting, coordinating, and participating in these security guarantees. This is a major step forward,” he added, according to a statement from his office.
During the joint meeting at the White House, Zelensky described his exchange with Trump as “the best” they have had so far in efforts to end the war. “I think we had a very good conversation with President Trump — maybe the best one, though perhaps the best is yet to come. We discussed very sensitive issues,” he said, sitting alongside Trump and European leaders.
Later, Zelensky revealed that Ukraine had offered to purchase American weapons worth $90 billion, while the Financial Times reported a broader $100 billion plan, largely to be financed by European partners.
