Morocco and Artificial Intelligence: Preparing for Tomorrow’s World

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is reshaping societies, revolutionizing labor, and driving automation in production and services. Morocco actively embraces this transformation, with AI taking center stage during the upcoming Science Week from February 17 to 23 in Benguérir. This event will explore global technological shifts. Just days earlier, a global AI summit in Paris, attended by Moroccan Minister Amal El Fallah Seghrouchni, culminated in a joint declaration by 59 countries advocating for open, inclusive, and ethical AI. The next global summit is set for India.

Morocco’s commitment to AI development is evident through initiatives such as the “AI Movement” Center at Mohammed VI Polytechnic University (UM6P) in Rabat. Established in 2020 under the patronage of King Mohammed VI, this UNESCO Category 2 center fosters AI research, training, and collaboration. Additionally, the "Maison de l’Intelligence Artificielle" promotes public-private partnerships. The country's digital infrastructure is notable, with UM6P hosting Africa’s most powerful supercomputer, the “African Supercomputing Center,” placing Morocco among the world's top 100 intelligent centers. Cybersecurity remains a priority, with Morocco leading the African Network of Cybersecurity Authorities.

Morocco’s national strategy, “Maroc Digital 2030,” positions AI as a key driver for administrative modernization and economic innovation. By 2027, the plan aims to train 22,500 youth annually in digital skills, with over 140 university programs dedicated to digital technologies, including 20 focused on AI. Initiatives like the e-learning platform “Academia Raqmya” and programs such as “GENIE” and “JobInTech” enhance digital capabilities for students, businesses, and public servants.

On the international front, Morocco champions African cooperation in AI. The country hosted the Africa AI Forum, which fostered dialogue on governance and promoted the Rabat African Consensus. Additionally, Morocco co-sponsored the first UNESCO global recommendation on AI ethics, adopted in 2021, and supported the inaugural UN resolution on AI ethics, co-sponsored with the U.S. in 2024.

Morocco also signed the “Current AI” declaration alongside seven other nations, contributing €400 million to advance open AI models and promote responsible innovation. This initiative emphasizes openness, accountability, and inclusiveness in AI development.

As AI reshapes industries and societies, Morocco positions itself at the forefront, promoting responsible innovation to address global challenges such as climate change, public health, and resource management. The nation embraces AI as a catalyst for progress, ensuring its development benefits society while upholding ethical standards.
