Moroccan Prime Minister Aziz Akhannouch led a high-level meeting in Rabat to review the progress of the National Program for Drinking Water Supply and Irrigation 2020-2027. The session, attended by key ministers and senior officials, focused on strategies to ensure reliable access to potable water and reduce irrigation deficits, following the directives of HM King Mohammed VI.

Officials reported that as of early July 2025, national dam reserves stood at approximately 4.3 billion cubic meters, representing a filling rate of 37.4%. Despite a slight improvement in water availability, authorities emphasized the need for continued caution and public awareness campaigns to promote responsible water consumption, particularly during the high-demand summer months.

The meeting also assessed major infrastructure projects, including two major interconnection systems linking river basins, the commissioning of eight large dams since 2021, and the expansion of seawater desalination capacity to over 1.7 billion cubic meters by 2030. Efforts are also being made to improve rural water access and increase the reuse of treated wastewater for irrigation.

Akhannouch urged all stakeholders to maintain their commitment to meeting the program’s deadlines and to coordinate water policy with agricultural development goals.
