Enhancing Transport Ties: Morocco and Spain Forge Ahead
In a move aimed at fostering economic collaboration, Morocco and Spain have pledged to expedite the implementation of a memorandum of understanding on transport and logistics cooperation inked earlier this year. Officials from both nations convened in Rabat on Monday to strategize on enhancing mobility between the two countries.
Led by Ministers Mohammed Abdeljalil of Morocco and Oscar Puente Santiago of Spain, discussions centered on optimizing maritime, rail, and road transportation. Recognizing the pivotal role of seamless cross-border travel in facilitating tourism and trade, the ministers underscored the need for efficient transportation networks.
Emphasizing maritime initiatives, attention was drawn to plans for launching a ferry route connecting Tarfaya, Morocco, and Puerto del Rosario in the Canary Islands. This initiative aims to catalyze regional tourism and commerce by fostering easier access between the two regions.
In the realm of rail transport, both parties explored avenues for Spanish investment in Moroccan railroad projects and discussed possibilities for technical collaboration between operators. This strategic dialogue seeks to enhance connectivity and efficiency in rail transportation infrastructure.
Regarding road transport, the ministers lauded the ongoing dialogue facilitated by the Morocco-Spain Joint Committee on International Road Transport. They also deliberated on options to bolster cooperation in alignment with the evolving needs of the industry.
Furthermore, the ministers reviewed preparations for "Marhaba 2024," an annual operation facilitating the return of Moroccans residing abroad. Stressing the importance of coordinated efforts, they highlighted the necessity of ensuring the smooth execution of this initiative.
By formalizing the establishment of a joint task force and action plan, Morocco and Spain have reaffirmed their commitment to elevating logistical ties to new heights. Strengthening connectivity across sectors is poised to yield significant economic and social dividends for both sides of the Strait of Gibraltar.
