European parliament calls for sanctions against two Israeli ministers
Strasbourg, September 11, 2025 – The European Parliament on Thursday called for sanctions against two Israeli ministers described as “extremists” and urged the suspension of part of the EU-Israel Association Agreement, citing the situation in Gaza. The non-binding resolution, initiated by the Social Democrats, Greens, and centrists, passed with 305 votes in favor, 151 against, and 122 abstentions.
The measures, supported by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, are unlikely to be easily adopted by member states, which remain deeply divided. Nevertheless, the resolution signals a shift in tone from both European institutions. The debate sparked tensions in the chamber, particularly dividing the right-wing groups.
The resolution specifically targets Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich and National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir, accusing them of “extremism.” While the original draft alleged they “openly called for genocidal actions,” this phrasing was rejected in the vote.
In addition, Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) called for the suspension of the commercial chapter of the EU-Israel Association Agreement. The resolution also reiterates calls for the “unconditional release of Israeli hostages” and the “dismantling of the Hamas terrorist organization.”
