Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Defense Minister Israel Katz, and senior government and defense officials toured southern Syria on Wednesday amid ongoing reports of potential security agreement negotiations with Damascus. The delegation also included Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar, IDF Chief of Staff Major-General Eyal Zamir, and Shin Bet head David Zini.

The visit comes as Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa confirmed in an interview that his government is engaged in direct talks with Israel. According to Sharaa, progress has been made, but a final agreement would require Israel to return to its pre-December 8 borders, referencing the period after the fall of the Assad regime and subsequent Israeli strikes in Syria.

Israeli officials have suggested that part of the agreement could include a corridor allowing flights over southern Syria en route to Iran, highlighting the strategic and regional implications of such a pact.

Meanwhile, Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shibani is scheduled to visit Washington on Thursday, marking the first official Syrian ministerial visit to the U.S. capital in 25 years. The trip underscores the potential for renewed diplomatic engagement between Syria, Israel, and international actors in the Middle East.
