French Fugitive Captured in Moroccan Crackdown at Ceuta Border
In a significant cross-border operation targeting illicit trade, Moroccan authorities apprehended a French national wanted by Interpol at the Bab Sebta (Ceuta) border post on Sunday, June 2. The suspect, whose name has not been disclosed by the General Directorate of National Security (DGSN), faces allegations of drug trafficking and firearm possession, leading to an international arrest warrant issued by French judicial authorities.
The DGSN reported that the arrest took place as the fugitive attempted to flee Moroccan territory. This operation highlights Morocco's commitment to combating organized crime and enhancing regional security through collaboration with international partners.
Morocco's stringent stance against narcotics trafficking recently gained global recognition when Jallal Toufiq secured a third term representing the country on the International Narcotics Control Board (INCB). Elected on April 9, Toufiq's re-appointment underscores Morocco's credibility in addressing the complex challenges associated with drug control, ranging from economic impacts to social and health issues.
The INCB's mandate aligns with Morocco's vision, encouraging member states to implement drug policies and prevention measures that protect against stigmatization and discriminatory treatment. Toufiq's renewed tenure highlights Morocco's dedication to enhancing national and international cooperation in eradicating drug trafficking while upholding the principles outlined in drug control conventions.
Morocco's re-election to the INCB stands as a testament to the international community's confidence in the nation's persistent efforts to tackle the drug problem. The DGSN's annual report for 2023 documented an alarming 99,513 drug trafficking cases and the arrest of 130,212 individuals involved in the illicit trade.
As drug use remains a criminal offense in Morocco, the country is committed to addressing this issue on a global scale, employing a comprehensive approach that includes law enforcement, prevention, and international collaboration.
