International Socialist Council to Meet in Rabat
This Saturday, the President of the Spanish Government, Pedro Sánchez, who is also the Secretary General of the Spanish Socialist Workers' Party (PSOE), will travel to Morocco to preside over the World Council meeting of the Socialist International in Rabat. The event, scheduled from December 20 to December 22, will be co-presided by Driss Lachgar, Secretary General of the Moroccan party, Union of Socialist Forces (USFP).
Sánchez, who was elected leader of the Socialist International in 2022, is expected to deliver a speech during the gathering. The Socialist International, established in its current form in 1951, is a global alliance of socialist, labor, and social-democratic political groups, as well as unions that adhere to these ideologies. Since 2006, the organization has been home to approximately 132 political parties worldwide.
The event will span three days, beginning with discussions on topics such as peace, security, and democracy in Africa, as well as the recent floods affecting the continent. Other significant issues to be covered include the Rwanda-Democratic Republic of Congo conflict and the ongoing Palestinian-Israeli dispute. One of the key focal points will be the empowerment of women in the North African and Middle Eastern regions.
The Socialist International's meetings, which began on Tuesday at the USFP headquarters in Rabat, have attracted 200 participants and have already initiated debates on the aforementioned topics. These gatherings reflect the organization's ongoing commitment to addressing global challenges and fostering cooperation among socialist and progressive parties across the world.
