Israeli warplanes carried out a series of airstrikes on Monday afternoon in northeastern Lebanon, targeting areas in the Anti-Lebanon mountains near the Syrian border. According to the Israeli army, the raids struck training camps belonging to Hezbollah’s elite al-Radwan unit. The strikes caused several injuries and sparked a large fire, while drones continued to fly over the region.

Local sources reported that the bombings hit the outskirts of Halabta and Harabta, extending to Zeghrine and Cherbine, as well as rural areas near Laboué and Nabi Moussa in northern Bekaa. Videos shared by residents showed plumes of smoke rising above the mountainous terrain. Rescue teams were dispatched to the affected sites.

An Israeli army spokesperson stated that the targeted camps were used by Hezbollah to store weapons and train fighters in preparation for attacks against Israel. He accused the group of violating the ceasefire agreement that came into effect on November 27, 2024 — a truce Israel itself has frequently breached with strikes in southern Lebanon and, more rarely, in the Bekaa.

The airstrikes occurred amid reports, later denied by Lebanese security sources, that Israel had asked through U.S. intermediaries for the Lebanese army to begin disarmament operations in Baalbek and Hermel. The Lebanese government recently approved a five-phase plan to dismantle armed militias across the country, starting with Hezbollah’s positions south of the Litani River.

The Anti-Lebanon mountains have repeatedly been bombed by Israel since the truce, with the Israeli military claiming the area serves as a corridor for weapons smuggling from Syria, including tunnels and clandestine crossings.
