Kevin Feige, President of Marvel Studios, has announced a bold shift for the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU): the complete recasting of all X-Men characters for a future film set to release after Avengers: Secret Wars in 2027. Speaking at a press conference reported by Variety, Feige explained that this marks a new era for Marvel, aiming to refresh the franchise’s direction.

While iconic actors from the early 2000s X-Men films — including Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, Alan Cumming, Rebecca Romijn, James Marsden, and Kelsey Grammer — will return for Avengers: Doomsday in 2026, Feige confirmed this will be a farewell appearance. New actors will take over these beloved roles in future projects, alongside previously unseen mutants.

Feige cited the 2015 Secret Wars comic storyline, which involved “the collapse and re-convergence of multiple timelines,” as a foundation for this transformation. “We’re using this story not only to conclude the arcs we began with Endgame, but more importantly, to shape the future,” he explained.

He carefully avoided the term reboot, calling it a “scary word,” and instead used reset, aiming to create a new, unified timeline. “That’s the direction we’re heading in,” Feige noted, defending the idea of bringing in new actors.

He also compared Marvel’s strategy to that of other franchises. “Amy Pascal and David Heyman are looking for a new James Bond. David Corenswet is the new Superman — and he’s fantastic. These changes are part of what keeps stories alive,” Feige stated.

Clearly, the superhero genre still has a long life ahead — and Marvel plans to lead that charge into the next decade.
