Lebanese president reaffirms state's control over weapons amid Hezbollah opposition
Lebanese President Joseph Aoun has pledged to bring all weapons under state control, a move aimed at reducing the influence of armed factions such as Hezbollah. Aoun acknowledged the challenges ahead but expressed confidence in achieving this goal.
“Exclusive control of weapons will be achieved despite the difficulties and obstacles,” Aoun stated, adding that Lebanese authorities are awaiting a proposal from the army to formalize a disarmament strategy for approval.
The president emphasized the importance of today's cabinet session, which aims to accelerate decisions regarding the state's exclusive control over arms. He assured the public that his administration is committed to fulfilling the terms of the presidential oath and ministerial statement.
Diplomatic challenges and regional dynamics
On relations with Israel and the US proposal mediated by envoy Tom Barrack, Aoun explained, “Lebanon’s implementation of the American proposal also requires approval from Syria and Israel, along with American and French guarantees.” This highlights the complexity of balancing regional diplomacy with internal security concerns.
Aoun stressed that achieving state control over weapons would not compromise Lebanon’s sovereignty or rights, signaling his administration’s intent to maintain national stability while pursuing this controversial goal.
Hezbollah’s defiance
Hezbollah has strongly opposed the government’s plans to disarm, calling the move a “grave sin.” The group announced it would disregard the government's decision, made earlier this week, to task the army with drafting a disarmament plan by year’s end.
This growing tension underscores the challenges facing Aoun’s administration as it seeks to navigate the delicate balance between national unity, security reforms, and external diplomatic pressures.
