Morocco advances solar energy frontiers with $1 billion sun-to-fuel venture
A groundbreaking sustainable fuel project is taking shape in Morocco as Swiss cleantech company Synhelion commits $1 billion to establish a solar-powered synthetic fuel production facility. The ambitious initiative aims to generate 100,000 tons of fuel annually using innovative sun-to-liquid technology developed at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology.
The project's financing structure combines bank loans, share sales, and government support. Synhelion has already attracted significant backing from key industry players, including Lufthansa, Italian energy company Eni, and Swiss automotive distributor Amag, along with support from European governments.
Morocco's selection for this transformative project underscores its emergence as a renewable energy powerhouse, capitalizing on its abundant solar resources and strategic geographic position. This development represents a significant step toward reducing global fossil fuel dependency and advancing sustainable energy solutions.
The company's CEO, Gianluca Ambrosetti, shared these plans with Asharq Business, as reported by Zawya.
