Russian President Vladimir Putin has signaled that Moscow may resume nuclear tests if the United States proceeds with its own, following statements by former U.S. President Donald Trump instructing the Pentagon to “begin testing” American nuclear weapons.

During a Security Council meeting, Putin asked relevant authorities to prepare plans for potential nuclear test activities and to submit proposals for review. He emphasized that Russia has historically respected the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty, but warned that any U.S. or other violations would prompt “appropriate retaliatory measures.”

Defense Minister Andrei Beloussov suggested the Novaya Zemlya archipelago in the Arctic as a possible testing site, citing increased military threats from U.S. plans. Russia has regularly tested non-nuclear delivery systems, such as the Poseidon underwater drone and the Borevestnik missile, but has not conducted an actual nuclear detonation since 1990.

The head of Russian foreign intelligence, Sergey Naryshkin, noted that diplomats have requested clarification from U.S. counterparts on Trump’s remarks. Experts warn that renewed nuclear testing could escalate tensions and fuel a new global arms race.
