Spain offers €10,000 grants to digital nomads moving to Extremadura
Spain’s western Extremadura region continues its efforts to combat depopulation by offering grants of up to €10,000 to attract digital nomads and remote workers. While many Spanish regions grapple with overtourism and rising living costs, Extremadura stands out, actively seeking new residents to boost its population and economy.
A strategy to reverse depopulation
Located along Spain’s border with Portugal, Extremadura is one of the country's least populated areas. Known for its historic cities and natural beauty, the region offers an appealing alternative to Spain’s bustling urban centers. The initiative, part of a broader regional policy extending through 2030, aims to draw in skilled professionals, particularly those in technological fields who work remotely or are self-employed.
How the program works
Initially announced in August 2024, the program offered grants of up to €15,000, garnering significant international attention. Today, the regional government has adjusted the grant to a maximum of €10,000 and continues to accept applications until October 8, 2025. The grant is available to both foreign and domestic applicants, provided they meet specific criteria:
- Applicants must work entirely remotely using digital tools.
- They must commit to residing in Extremadura for at least two years.
- They must not have lived in Extremadura in the six months prior to applying.
- Foreign nationals must hold legal residency in Spain, including a NIE (foreign identity number) or a TIE residency card.
Grants are distributed in a single payment and vary based on specific factors. Applicants under 30, women, or those moving to towns with fewer than 5,000 inhabitants are eligible for the full €10,000. Others may qualify for €8,000.
High demand fuels additional funding
To date, the program has received 470 applications, with 195 already approved. Due to the overwhelming interest, the regional government has allocated an additional €1 million to the initiative, ensuring more remote workers can benefit from the scheme.
Why choose Extremadura?
Extremadura offers an affordable alternative to Spain’s major cities, where living costs have surged. A cost of living comparison reveals that living in Cáceres, one of Extremadura’s historic cities, is 46% cheaper than Barcelona and 37% less expensive than Madrid.
Beyond its affordability, the region boasts stunning landscapes, including natural parks and meadows, ideal for outdoor enthusiasts. History lovers will also appreciate cities like Mérida, with its Roman ruins, and UNESCO-listed Cáceres, known for its mix of architectural styles.
Application process
Applications must be submitted electronically via the Extremadura General Electronic Access Point. A digital certificate or electronic Spanish ID card is required to complete the process. Applicants must provide documentation proving their remote work status, residency, and tax compliance. All documents must be officially translated into Spanish if necessary. Processing times average three months.
For non-EU nationals, obtaining a Spanish digital nomad visa is a prerequisite before applying for the grant. Once the visa is approved, applicants can apply for the program.
A chance to start anew
Extremadura’s grant program offers digital nomads and remote workers not only financial support but also the opportunity to enjoy a quieter lifestyle in a region rich with culture, history, and natural beauty.
