Strengthening Ties: Morocco and Ecuador Forge New Relations

Morocco has reaffirmed its commitment to support Ecuador President Daniel Noboa in his pursuit of national development and stability. This declaration was made by Minister of Foreign Affairs Nasser Bourita during a press conference on Saturday, coinciding with Noboa’s inauguration.

Minister Bourita conveyed King Mohammed VI’s congratulations to President Noboa, emphasizing Morocco's presence at the event as a testament to the monarch’s desire to bolster bilateral relations, particularly in the economic, commercial, and security sectors.

Bourita characterized this moment as historic for Morocco-Ecuador relations, noting that his visit marks the first time a Moroccan foreign minister has traveled to Quito. The significance of this visit is underscored by the recent developments in diplomatic ties, especially following Ecuador’s suspension of recognition of the self-styled Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic (SADR).

The North African nation has garnered Ecuador’s backing for Morocco’s Autonomy Plan, viewed as a credible approach to resolving the Sahara dispute. This support has contributed to a larger trend of international recognition for Morocco’s territorial integrity, with several nations now endorsing its sovereignty over the region.

Further solidifying this partnership, Ecuadorian Minister of Foreign Affairs Gabriela Sommerfeld announced plans to establish an embassy in Rabat, highlighting a commitment to enhance diplomatic and economic ties. Bourita welcomed this development, indicating that it signifies a new chapter in relations between the two countries.

He noted that since Ecuador's decision to discontinue recognition of the Polisario, the two nations have crafted a roadmap aimed at fostering South-South cooperation. Despite their geographical distance, Morocco and Ecuador find common ground on numerous issues, fostering a collaborative spirit that transcends borders.

The Moroccan foreign affairs minister elaborated on the expanding cooperation across various sectors, including economic initiatives and agricultural partnerships. He also highlighted the increasing availability of study abroad scholarships for students, further reinforcing the ties between the two nations.

This evolving relationship is a testament to the commitment of both countries to navigate challenges together, while promoting mutual interests and shared goals. As Morocco and Ecuador embark on this promising journey, the path ahead seems ripe with potential for fruitful collaboration.
